| When creating major characters, J.K.Rowling showed her profound philosophical thoughts in Harry Potter series, part of which can be explained in the view of Sartre's Existentialism. Harry Potter and Voldmort were quite alike in birth, but why were their characters so different? According to Sartre, birth existed in the form of in-itself, while characters were determined by for-itself, which negated itself by means of man's choices when facing dilemma so as to form specific characters. Voldmort's cruelty, secretiveness, tyranny and Harry Potter's bravery, love, responsibility were all formed and strengthened by their choices. The choices contributed to the formation of characters, which proved Sartre's assertion: Existence Precedes Essence. |
