| Doctor Jekyll, Susan Sontag's rewriting of Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, presents a modern man who loses himself in the wartime anguish. For the sake of so called freedom, he turns to the mysterious religion to gain the individual power, only to find himself disillusioned, which leads to his next effort to transform into an evil figure so that he can be redeemed with the sins he may commit. This article attempts to closely analyze the protagonist's two freedom searching journeys and points out that they end up in vain because nobody is to enjoy freedom without any moral concerns. By bravely facing their personal situations and understanding the restrictions of freedom, people can taste the sweetness of freedom. |
