| Following the previous chapter in The Analects of Confucius, Zi Xia in the chapter of “Treasure virtue rather than beauty” used sarcasm to doubt Confuciuss intertextuality between “honor parents” and “respect brothers”, and he also questioned his extent of importance of outside and inside. Zi Xia indicated that “honor parents” and “respect brothers” may be different domestically and externally, but a man should develop his inside and outside at the same time. In the subsequent chapter “Man without dignity”, Confucius explained the importance of outside and inside, which should be a set of loyalty behavior including “honor parents” and “respect brothers”. He criticized Zi Xias rhetoric of “I would like to say”. |
